De Beers Group Industry Services presents the latest add-on to the AMS2 to control humidity levels.
An easy to install add-on to help control the humidity levels to lower static charge and improve performance in low humidity environments.
Diamond can readily accumulate an electrostatic charge. With small diamonds in particular this can make automatically handling them problematic. If the AMS2 machine is used in an environment with low humidity an electrostatic charge can build up quite easily and give rise to stone handling problems.
When the AMS2 software is operating the temperature and humidity values inside the machine are displayed on the bottom right hand side of the main program window.
The relative humidity which is required for operation of the AMS2 machine is between 45% and 65% with a temperature between 15 degrees and 28 degrees. Note that during operation the AMS2 machine will warm slightly thereby drying the air inside and reducing the humidity.
It may be possible to correct for humidity problems by adjusting the room environment. For example, if the room is air conditioned then adjusting the settings of this may improve matters.
Commercial humidifiers are available but great care should be taken when using these:
If they are sited in an air conditioned room they may be humidifying the air which the air conditioning is then replacing with dry air, so may at best be ineffective.
If the outlet of a humidifier is directed into the air inlets of an AMS2 machine the moist air may condense and damage the internal components and circuitry.
The De Beers Group Industry Services Humidifier Accessory controls the humidity inside the AMS2 machine. During a screening run if the humidity is low then the humidifier is commanded to increase the humidity.
The humidifier cannot dry the air inside the AMS2 machine so it cannot reduce the humidity if it is too high. This is not, however, a frequently encountered problem.
If the humidity is very low (less than 25%) then the humidifier settings may need to be adjusted by De Beers Group Industry Services Technical Support after installation.
If the humidity is exceptionally low then the humidifier will increase the humidity (and therefore improve the stone handling) but it may not be possible to reach the desired target value.
Yes. A full installation kit is included. A video showing how to install the humidifier is available on the De Beers Group Industry Services website.
Yes. It is recommended that the humidifier, water bottle and pipework are regularly sterilised. Similarly if the machine has not been used for some time then the same components should be sterilised before use. A video showing how to do this is available on the De Beers Group Industry Services website.
Prior to a screening run the water bottle should be topped up with sufficient deionized water for the likely length of the run.
The humidifier requires deionized water to be used and a bottle of this is supplied with the installation kit. Further supplies may be easily obtained from local suppliers.
No. The particulates in these will damage the humidifier accessory.
