Our History

De Beers Group, the world's leading diamond company, established the International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR) in 2008 to provide a premium grading service to the market supported by innovative technology.

With an initial investment of US$10 million, a new facility was established in Surat, India in 2015 with the capacity to process over US$500 million of diamonds every year.

Since then IIDGR has continued its drive for integrity in polished diamonds by developing market leading synthetic testing services and detection instruments. To support this demand, a further US$5 million expansion was completed at the Surat facility in 2016.

2017 saw the launch of our education programmes which draw on the unparalleled expertise within De Beers Group.

In 2019, IIDGR was rebranded to De Beers Group Industry Services to align more closely with the rest of the group.

In 2020, De Beers Group Industry Services was re-branded De Beers Institute of Diamonds, highlighting its expertise for the benefit of both the trade and consumers.

In 2021, The De Beers Code of Origin, a trusted source programme that reflects De Beers’ deep commitment to social and environmental responsibility, was launched. The De Beers Code of Origin is reflected in the unique inscription on the diamond discovered by De Beers in Botswana, Canada, Namibia or South Africa

Today

With laboratories and offices based at the De Beers Institute of Diamonds in the UK, in Belgium and in India, De Beers Group Industry Services provides a wide range of services to support the diamond industry:

• Diamond grading, exclusively on natural, untreated diamonds. It combines proprietary technology with innovative grading techniques and processes to ensure the utmost accuracy, consistency and integrity.

• Testing services (melee, parcels and set diamonds) with a reliable and repeatable outcome.

• Proprietary synthetic detection equipment that has been top ranked in the recent Diamond Producers Association’s project Assure.

• Training courses, both on-line and laboratory-based, suitable for new industry entrants right through to experienced professionals. Our courses have been developed by our experts and are all CPD-accredited.
